A worked example

Three things Aditya would change on his own old site.

This is the review you get when you ask for one, done on the old design of Aditya’s own website, when his websites were sold as quietlybuild. He opened it on a phone and read it the way a stranger would. These are the three changes he would make first, in the order he would make them.

The old design of quietlybuild.in, the first screen on a phone: a dark green page with gold type, two buttons in small capitals, and the first client’s site just starting under the WhatsApp bar.
In the pictures: the first screen of the old design, on a phone, as the review read it.

The first ten seconds

What a stranger sees first.

A dark green page with gold type. The headline says exactly who it is for and the first paragraph gives the price, so in one screen a stranger knows what this is and what it costs. What they cannot do yet is check any of it: there is no work on the first screen.

Why his own site
It is the only review we show in public. No client’s site is in it, and it is judged by the same rules as yours would be.
  1. Show the work on the first screen.

The first screen is all words. The hotel’s site starts under the WhatsApp bar.

  2. Give the introductions a button of their own.

The offer to speak to the hotel and the New Zealand practice is folded inside a question, 16 screens down.

  3. Set the buttons and promises in the reading type.

The words that carry the offer are the hardest to read: 12 px spaced capitals.

The three changes

In the order he would make them.

Change 1 of 3

Show the work on the first screen.

What a stranger sees
The first screen is the headline, the price, two buttons and three small promises. The first piece of work, a screenshot of the hotel’s site, starts 779 pixels down: exactly where the WhatsApp bar sits on a 390 × 844 phone. A stranger sees none of it until they scroll. When it arrives it is 313 pixels wide, with the NZ practice’s phone beside it at 107.
Why it matters
The site’s whole argument is “open them yourself”. In the first screen a stranger decides whether to keep reading, and at that moment they have only the site’s word for it. A web designer’s site is judged by the work first.
The change
Put one client’s real site, on a phone, straight under the headline, large enough to read, before the buttons. Say whose it is and give the address, so it can be opened.
The smallest version
Move the hotel’s screenshot above the two buttons and let it run the full width of the phone.
The second screen of the old design on a phone, one scroll down, under its header: the hotel’s site and the New Zealand practice’s phone, both small.
In the pictures: the first work a stranger can check, one scroll down.

Change 2 of 3

Give the introductions a button of their own.

What a stranger sees
The offer to put a stranger in touch with the hotel and the New Zealand practice sits inside the answer to the first question, “Why would I send you money?”. The answer stays folded until it is tapped, on the sixteenth of eighteen screens. There is no button for it anywhere on the page.
Why it matters
Someone about to send a first payment of US$3,000, as that design asked, to a person they have never met, in another country, wants to hear it from someone like them. The hotel and the New Zealand practice are both willing to say so, and the site puts it where a stranger reading on a phone is least likely to reach.
The change
Give it a short block of its own, straight after the work: one line saying who you will introduce them to, and one button that opens the request already written. Keep the sentence in the answer as well.
The smallest version
Copy the sentence out of the answer into the paragraph under the sites, with a link that opens the request.
The first question on the old design, opened, with the offer of an introduction inside the answer. One line of the answer is covered: it has since been retired.
In the pictures: the offer that lowers the risk most. The covered line is the old design’s, since retired.

Change 3 of 3

Set the buttons and promises in the reading type.

What a stranger sees
Every button, label and promise on the first screen is set in small, widely spaced capitals in a typewriter face. “GET A FREE SITE REVIEW” is 11.8 px. The three promises under the buttons, “Written reply within one working day” among them, are 12 px. The paragraph above them is 18 px.
Why it matters
The words that carry the offer and the promises are the hardest to read on a phone held at arm’s length, so they are the ones most likely to be skipped. Capitals also read as form labels rather than as something to press.
The change
Set buttons, promises and labels in sentence case, in the same typeface as the paragraphs, at 16 px or more. Keep the typewriter face for the short labels that are only there to be scanned.
The smallest version
Change the button style, which is one rule in the stylesheet, and the three promises under it.

And the rest

What already works, and what happened next.

  • The headline says who it is for, in plain words: “Websites for businesses where the sale still happens on a phone call.”
  • The price is on the first screen, and it is one number: US$7,500.
  • Every client is named, and each live site can be opened.
  • The review form says what happens to what you type: nothing is sent from the page.

How he read it

He opened the site on a phone-sized screen, 390 × 844, as a first-time visitor, and read from the top without skipping, the way a stranger would. He noted where he stopped, what he could not check, and what he had to hunt for. Then he measured what he had noticed.

This is the previous design of his own site, built on 23 September 2026 and replaced before it went live. He read it from its build on his own machine, so that no client’s site is shown here. Everything above is true of that build.

What happened next

He made all three changes in the redesign that replaced it. On a phone, a client’s site started on the first screen, with his notes on it. Asking his clients got its own place, with a link that opened the request already written. And every button was set in the reading type. The same lessons are on these pages now.
